Boots Theory
Sam Vimes’s idea that people with less money upfront can end up paying more over time because they can only afford goods that need frequent replacement.
Context
In Terry Pratchett’s Discworld novel Men at Arms, Vimes compares a durable $50 pair of boots with a $10 pair that wears out quickly. The buyer who can afford the durable pair can spend $50 over ten years. The buyer replacing the cheap pairs spends $100 and still gets wet feet.
The example turns on when the money is available. The person who can pay more today has access to a lower cost over the life of the product.
Examples
- If you have to replace a cheap winter coat every year, several replacements can cost more than a coat that would have lasted through all those winters.
