Spoonerism

A mix-up in which the opening sounds of two words exchange places, often producing a humorous phrase.

Context

Spoonerisms can happen accidentally or be constructed deliberately. The term is named after William Archibald Spooner.

The exchange concerns sounds, so a written example may need different spelling to represent the resulting words.

Examples

  • Switching the initial sounds of “light rain” produces “right lane.”
