Specious

Superficially plausible, but actually wrong.

Context

Specious often describes reasoning or an argument that seems convincing on first hearing. The impression falls apart when you check the assumptions, the evidence, or the comparison.

Examples

  • “The price comparison was specious. It made one plan look cheaper by comparing a monthly rate with a yearly rate.”
