Forlornness

A feeling or appearance of loneliness, abandonment, or hopeless sadness.

Context

Forlornness is the noun form of forlorn. It can describe someone’s emotional state or the atmosphere of a place that seems deserted or neglected.

In discussions of liminal spaces, forlornness can help describe the absence of the people and activity a setting seems to expect. Kenopsia names a more specific response to a usually busy place becoming empty.

Examples

  • An overgrown playground with a single broken swing can have an air of forlornness.
