Liminal Space

A place or state in between. In online photography and art, it often means a familiar place that feels strangely removed from its usual purpose.

Context

The idea of a threshold applies to places and to changes in life. A stairwell connects two floors. The weeks between finishing school and starting a job can feel like a threshold in time.

The online aesthetic often comes from seeing a familiar place under unexpected conditions, such as when everyone has gone home. Empty rooms, artificial lighting, and traces of recent activity can make a place feel suspended between its usual uses.

Examples

  • An airport concourse at night still looks ready for passengers, even when all its gates are closed.
  • A school hallway lit after hours can feel different once you no longer expect a class to come through the doors.
