The Backrooms
A fictional maze of seemingly endless rooms and corridors, often entered by slipping out of ordinary reality.

Context
The Backrooms began as a 2019 internet horror post paired with a photograph of empty yellow rooms. It imagines a place with yellow wallpaper, old carpet, and fluorescent lights that never stop humming. Someone who noclips out of reality can end up there, surrounded by ordinary-looking architecture that repeats on an impossible scale.
Creators have since built their own versions in stories, wikis, games, and films. Some give the maze named levels and creatures. Others focus on the uncertainty of being alone in a familiar-looking place with no clear way out.
Examples
- Fiction2Reality uses the Backrooms as a starting point for 3D environments, animation, and short films.
- In Kane Parsons’s short film “The Backrooms (Found Footage)”, a camera operator falls into the maze and records what happens as he tries to find a way out.
